Me:
I live and work in Portland, Oregon. I enjoy living in a place that has a lot of natural beauty but is still odd enough to have personality and interest. From my home I can walk to old industrial buildings, to wooded areas, or hear the bang and clatter of trains working nearby. There is almost always something in the dust and detail of daily events to spark one's curiosity.
I also find that the Northwest landscape, for all its beauty, also holds a certain mystery, a darker realm, a certain 'other' story that is waiting to be told; a sort of northwest gothic. My aim is to always be aware of this in my surroundings and to allow it to enter the image as I create.
Creating:
I've always created art... can't remember a time when I didn't. I imagine that the desire to create is a trait that is hardwired. So, I expect to be always at it. Most of my paintings and prints are not born out of an image that is complete and finished in my mind before I start, but rather evolve through the process of creating. The projects that are the most satisfying are usually those that fully drive themselves with little to minimal conscious structuring. Printmaking adds another exciting dimension in that the final result is sometimes not really known until the plate is pulled. There is almost always an element of surprise.
Content: Bio forms, microscopic life, the human figure - often alone or in pairs, and stark landscapes make up most of the content in my work. I am always interested in undercurrents or unexpected connections that can exist in the mind, between individuals, or within the environment that surrounds us.
